EDU 02: DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVENESS OF
THE LEARNER
TOPIC: ROLE OF
HEREDITY AND ENVIRONMENT FOR PERSONALITY
Heredity means the
transference of the characteristics of parents to their offsprings through
genes in the chromosomes. By the
heredity of an individual we means all those inborn physical and mental traits
that he inherits from his parents and ancestors. Every child comes into this world with
certain physical and mental features, which he got from his parents. He is born in with a body and mind, which
developed from the fertilized ovum he got from his mother and father. He starts his life with a specific type of
behaviour and a certain sort of temperament.
All these traits, mental and physical, constitute his heredity.
By environment we mean all type physical
and mental factors that affect and influence the development of an
individual. The home, the family, the
neighbourhood, the peer group, the school and the entire community with their
temperaments and mental traits constitute his environment. Everything that influences him apart from his
inherited traits constitutes his environment.
There is considerable evidence that
physical traits such a colour of the eye and skin, blood types, colour
blindness and the tendencies to be tall or short, follow the law of
heredity. But there is practically no
evidence to prove to what extent mental traits such as intelligence and
aptitude are inherited
